The impact of copper mining on the environment

ARE THE COPPER WIRES PLAYS VITAL ROLE IN OUR LIFE THAN OUR EXISTENCE

Mining is the extraction of valuable minerals or other geological materials from the Earth. But what if i tell you that the so called extraction of those minerals a actually making our survival on the edge. Generally the top 40 Mining Multinationals has reported 683 billion U.S dollars of revenue in 2018.But they have forgotten that at what cost they are just digging the ground at the continuous basis.

TYPES OF MINING-

  1. Open-pit mining/open-surface mining
  2. Underground mining
  3. In-situ mining
  4. Open cast mining/placer mining

Open-pit mining/open-surface mining:-

Open-pitopen-cast or open cut mining is a surface mining technique of extracting rock or minerals from the earth by their removal from an open pit or borrow. references-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-pit_mining

Underground mining:-

Underground mining is used to extract ore from below the surface of the earth safely, economically and with as little waste as possible. The entry from the surface to an underground mine may be through a horizontal or vertical tunnel, known as an adit, shaft or decline.

In-situ mining:-

In-situ leaching (ISL), also called in-situ recovery (ISR) or solution mining, is a mining process used to recover minerals such as copper and uranium through boreholes drilled into a deposit, in situ. references-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_situ_leach

Open cast mining/Placer mining:-

Placer mining /ˈplæsər/ is the mining of stream bed (alluvial) deposits for minerals. This may be done by open-pit (also called open-cast mining) or by various surface excavating equipment or tunnelling equipment. references-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Placer_mining

The worst one among all these ways of mining-

In my opinion the most destructive way of mining among them is underground mining. The majority of the world’s coal is obtained through underground mines.  While underground mining, which allows coal companies to extract deeper deposits of coal.

latest news-The Centre will pay Rs 1,240 crore to Coal India’s exploration arm for two years up to 2021 to explore blocks that would be auctioned to commercial coal miners, company executives said.“In an effort to offer fully explored blocks on auctions to commercial miners, the centre has decided to nearly treble monetary allocation to the Coal India arm, Central Mine Planning & Design Institute Ltd (CMPDIL), so that it can increase its exploration acreages multiples times,” a senior Coal Ind ..Read more at-

And this is not the first time that our government is investing that huge amount for preparing our own dead land. For the development of our Nation it is important to understand the limit as humans, otherwise the consequences will be worse.

The worse effect of underground mining-

  • Underground mining causes huge amounts of waste earth and rock to be brought to the surface – waste that often becomes toxic when it comes into contact with air and water.
  • It causes subsidence as mines collapse and the land above it starts to sink. This causes serious damage to buildings.
  • It lowers the water table, changing the flow of groundwater and streams. In Germany for example, over 500 million cubic metres of water are pumped out of the ground every year. Only a small percentage of this is used by industry or local towns – the rest is wasted. What’s worse is that removing so much water creates a kind of funnel that drains water from an area much larger than the immediate coal-mining environment.
  • Coal mining produces also greenhouse gas emissions.

The missing ethics:-

  1. The over expenditure from the budget of government in the mining activities.
  2. Not focusing on the sustainable development.
  3. improper balance between the technological as well as environmental development.
  4. More focused on the development by destructive ways than constructive ones.
